Tasty Plants I'm growing this year

 Goodbye lawn and HELLO fruits!

I had a lot of requests to share what food I’m growing this year and it’s definitely enough to make a separate post.
I ripped up a piece of my lawn to make room for two raised veggie gardens, but I’m also growing plants in the ground and in containers so I can gather some insight on future Garden Guide segments 🌱

FRONT LAWN VEGGIES (all grown from seed)
▪️ Rampicante squash - growing in the former lawn. I grew this at WLTX in South Carolina and it literally ended up in the parking lot it got so big
🤣
▪️ Palermo White Zucchini - should have a nice nutty flavor
▪️ Eggplant Nagasaki Long - very mild flavor and some people eat it raw!
▪️ Tomato Thorburns Terra Cotta - supposed to make huge and very sweet fruit
▪️Purple Cauliflower - I got this free from the library. It’s growing great! Sorry i forgot to take a picture haha

May 6 Cucumber "Space Saver"

CITRUS TREES (all of these overwintered in the garage when temperstures dropped below 30F)
▪️ Owari Satsuma - beginning to set buds now. I had about 10 fruit! They are cold hardy and taste like the “cuties” at the store
▪️ Meyer Lemon - a classic! It dropped every leaf last spring and didn’t produce fruit, but has since recovered
▪️ Ponderosa Lemon - one of the largest citrus there is! This is my first year growing it after I got it on discount last autumn
▪️ Variegated Kumquat - I brought this one inside the house during the coldest weeks of the year because it’s a bit more cold sensitive
▪️ Kumquat “Fukushu” - a friend gifted me this. Very excited to see what it does.

OUTSIDE ALL YEAR LONG PLANTS
  • Blackberry - I grew this in a pot for 2 years but it’s just getting too big so I put it in the ground. "Berried Treasure" Everbearing strawberries - these honestly don’t taste great, but they are pretty!
  • Raspberry Anne - Just a baby! A home depot purchase. We’ll see how it does!
  • Persimmon “Jiro” - smaller growing and prolific! I got it last autumn and it already had a fruit on it. Unlike the persimmon you get at the store, this has no bitterness!
  • Blueberries - I’m growing these in containers with so much success. Eventually I will put them in the ground.
  • Lil's fig.
  • Grapes - I mentioned that one in my previous post. It’s my first year and I’m so excited to see a few flower buds growing on it!
