Hummingbirds love flowers that are shaped for their long beaks to poke in (and if it's red, you'll really catch their attention). I never saw a hummingbird on Sstaten Island until I planted Canna "Robert Kemp". Now they are annual visitors! Maybe one day I'll get the perfect picture, but in the meantime here are a few from this week.
Canna Robert Kemp overwinters for me every year. This year they did particularly well and are taller than they've ever been. The largest flower towers at least 9 feet high. It's one of the tallest plants in the yard!
