Early July 2024 Update from my Long Island Garden

 It's hot and humid this week and you can practically watch some of the tropical plants grow right before your eyes. It's pretty amazing! 

Things are getting big. Check out my Musa

Winter Survivors

This was only one year ago (August 2023)

Windmill Palm in this corner is growing SO fast and Daniel Weeks Hedyhium Ginger sprouted back beautifully and is taller than it was last year at this time!

My first time growing Fatsia in full shade. I am in LOVE! It is much more compact in full sun.

Sabal Minor is buried by my winter surviving Salvia Black and Blue

Madison Star Jasmine survived the winter without issues this year. It was a mild one! The fragance is amazing. At this point the cannas have kind of buried this plant.

Frostproof Gardenia is in bloom (Puerto Rican Hat Palm looking happy too!)

The Musa Veinte cohol was planted this spring, but the needle palm is doing fabulous!

WHOA - Canna Musafolia Rubra just became my tallest plant

Firstly, it was pretty impressive that they survived the winter, but I cannot believe how MASSIVE these cannas are now. It's only early July and they are already taller than the house. I've never had a canna this tall before. This is called Canna musafolia "Rubra"

Plumeria Melody is in bloom - again!

 Without a doubt my favorite plumeria (Maybe even moreso than divine!). I've had it since 2014 (that's 10 years) and it has bloomed every year outdoors AND inside too. It has a beautiful branching structure too.

"I did a thing" A really difficult thing! I decided it was time to take some cuttings of my plumeria divine. It's one of my absolute favorites and it is loaded in SO many plumeria infloresences. It's so prolific that a single branch can sometimes have TWO inflorescenes. On the same branch.... it is wild.

So are the hardy gardenia. My Gardenia Summer Snow has a few blooms! 

No blooms on my "Pretty Princess" Plumeria, but my Plumeria "Jenny" has a huge inflo!

Citrus in bloom!

 I was gifted a Fukushu Kumquat earlier this year and it's finally coming into bloom. It's small size makes it absolutely perfect for containers. The flesh is sweet and the pulp is tart - it's a really fun citrus to eat! I lost my Meiwa Kumquat when I was on vacation 2 winters ago (it died from underwatering in the house) so this is really exciting.
