Eastern Prickly Pears - Our only native cactus
If you're looking for a cool desert plant that can not only survive but thrive in our cold wet winters, Eastern Prickly Pears (Optunia humifusa) are something nice to consider. They bloom in early summer and put on quite a show. I have them in the permanent brick planters in front of my house where they are close enough to eye level for them to be noticed. Here are some pics of it's best blooming season yet!
